User Tool: Typing in edit window is Excruciatingly Slow in some circumstances
This is something I encountered back in April and ran into again today. If I am editing a User Tool near the beginning of the Tool, and the Tool is large enough that the edit window does not show all of the tool below the point where the edit window was opened, typing becomes excruciatingly slow. [And sometimes is slow--but not as slow--even if you can see all the way to the end] I reported this in the old forums here: https://forums.accordancebible.com/topic/37828-typing-in-parts-of-a-user-tool-is-excruciatingly-slow/#comment-195873
Here are steps to reproduce; they are based on those from the original post, but I have updated it in places, as the User Tool has continued to grow and that has changed some things.
-Download the user tool linked to below, and add it to your Accordance library
-Open the User Tool in a workspace
-Click somewhere in the section on Matthew 27:45-61 and press Command-U
-In the edit window that opens, start typing somewhere in that section. When I do so typing is unbelievably slow (the keyboard works fine but letters are very slow to appear on the screen)
-When what you have typed has finally appeared, scroll down to, say Luke 15:11-32 (Lost Sons) and try typing...it is just as slow there for me
-Now (when you can) scroll all the way down to the end of the edit window contents and note that it ends part way through the section on 1 Corinthians 8:1-13; in other words, the edit window is not showing the entire tool (which Is fine) but it is showing the maximum amount of text it can hold/display on opening.
-Now close the edit window (no need to save anything)
-In the tool tab in your workspace, scroll down to Luke 15:11-32 (lost Sons), click in that section and press command-U.
-Once the edit window pops up, start typing somewhere in the section..Back in April, typing worked there fine. Now it is slow, but not as slow as it is in the Matthew section of the tool [Since that date in April, I added notes for pericopes later in Luke, in Acts, and in Galatians. The the amount of text in the edit window is significantly greater now that it was in April]
-scroll down as far as the edit window will let you: it will let you scroll all the way down to the very end of the "TEMPLATE" section which is at the very end of the tool. In other words, the edit window has not "maxed out" as it did when working in Matthew.
-Once again, close the edit window (no need to save anything)
-In the tool tab in your workspace, scroll down to the second on 2 Thessalonians 2:14-17. Click in that section and press command-U.
-Once the edit window pops up, start typing somewhere in the section. As of today, typing here works just fine.
In the old forums, I also included step by step instructions on dumping everything into a new User Tool, to establish that the problem is not this specific User Tool. Those can still be found there.
I believe the problem is that Accordance is choking on too much text in the edit window. Edit windows opened from later in the tool show everything from that point through the end of the tools show improvement in typing speed. That improvement gets better the further down in the tool one starts/opens the edit window. (Notice the difference in response when opening at the Luke pericope suggested vs. 2 Thessalonians). This indicates to me that the User Tool windows that show slowed typing speed have gone over the limit that causes Accordance to choke.
The fact that the issue begins early in the tool, when the edit window doesn’t show the entire rest of the tools, says to me that Accordance is biting off more than it can chew. The amount of text/content from the User Tool shown in the Edit window needs to be significantly reduced so this doesn't happen.
I remember there being a setting in preferences/settings to determine how large a chunk of a User Tool opened in the edit window. With the options being something along the lines of small-medium-large. But I can’t find such a setting now. I’m pretty sure I looked for such a setting some time ago and didn’t find it. So either my memory is faulty, or that preference was removed. I started using Accordance at version 6 or 7, so I’ve been around through a lot of changes.
As a reminder, I'm working on an Intel MacBook running Ventura, using Accordance Aleph 14.1.0rc (first reported in Aleph 14.0.11). At the time I first reported it, Nathan was able to confirm this Intel Sequoia 15.4.1, Accordance Aleph 14.0.11.
