Correct Hebrew Bible Hit Count
AnsweredI am looking for a way to see the correct number of occurrences of Hebrew lexemes, ideally in instant details. Two examples:
- פֶּרֶק in Nah 3:1
-
When I Ctrl-Mouse-Over in HMT-W4, instant details displays:
פֶּ֙רֶק֙ (6x) פֶּרֶק (14x).
- Live click gives me “14 exact hits in 14 verses” for פֶּרֶק in HMT-W4 and 13 in ETCBC. Only if I add an equal sign in the search box do I get the results I'm looking for (i.e., two hits).
- Right click “search in” yields two hits (Nah 3:1; Obad 14)
- Right click “word study, lexeme” gives a word count of 14 occurrences for the root, which includes two different verbs (פרק, פרק־0, both glossed as ‘to tear away’) and two different nouns (פֶּרֶק פָּרָק), with the correct count for פֶּרֶק.
-
DCH divides פֶּרֶק into two homonyms, both hapax.
-
- כֹּבֶד in Nah 3:3
-
When I Ctrl-Mouse-Over in HMT-W4, instant details displays:
כֹ֣בֶד (77x) כֹּבֶד (173x)
- Live click gives me “173 exact hits in 162 verses” in HMT-W4 and “172 exact hits in 162 verses” in ETCBC.
- Right click “search in” yields 4 hits (Nah 3:3; Isa 30:27), once you manually exclude the prefixed וְ
- Right click “word study, lexeme” gives a word count of 173 occurrences for the root, which includes one verb (114x), one adjective (41x), and two nouns (14x and 4x).
-
Observations:
- In Hebrew, providing the total occurrences of the root is often unhelpful: I want to know the occurrences of the lexeme not the occurrences of all the different words that happen to share the same root. In the two examples above, both instant details and live click do not provide helpful information. I don't need to know how many times the root פרק occurs; I want to know whether the specific noun פֶּרֶק occurs anywhere else (in the opinion of those who tagged HMT-W4).
- I have no idea where the second smaller instant details # comes from (6x in the first example; 77x in the second).
I guess what I'm looking for is for instant details to display the number of hits for the lexeme in the specific verse I am looking at. (Bibleworks had a “require homonym match” toggle that made this kind of instant response a cinch.)
Is there a way to do this in Accordance? If not, I would dearly like to see it added.

Hello David Miller,
I am curious if the Analytics windows concrodance option would be of help? Or if what you are looking for is something different:

Thanks Brian (and Kristin for a similar suggestion in the old forum): I'm looking for something like this to appear in Instant Details (like Bibleworks) or when I Live Click on a Hebrew word. Is that possible?

Another way is to go to Obadiah 14 and triple click on פֶּ֔רֶק (not on הַפֶּ֔רֶק or עַל־הַפֶּ֔רֶק) then a menu will open and select “search for” and some option will appear. Selext the Lexeme and it will return the 2 occurrences you were looking for.

Right. I know how to search for all occurrences. I would like for instant details to display the correct number of occurrences for the lexeme (excluding homonyms) so that I can see at a glance how many times the specific word appears. The current hit #'s in Instant Details are wrong / unhelpful. As far as I can see, this is a problem across the board in Hebrew tagged databases.
If there is no immediate fix for Instant Details, I was hoping to find a “Live Click” solution.

Here's my solution: Select Word Study and Word Usage under Live Click preferences and make sure they open in different zones (I had them in the same zone). Not quite as good as correct hits under instant details, but it is still very quick and has the advantage of displaying all words of the same root so I am not necessarily dependent on HALOT's / HMT-W4's tagging decisions.

This is not what you are asking for but you can change the default lexicon that shows up in the instant details. The default lexicon is your top Hebrew Tool listed in your Library to change it simply drag whichever your preferred lexicon is to the top of the list, and that should now be the lexicon used when you Control-hover over any word.
Now, I am pretty sure that instant details was not designed in mind to show ‘search hits’ however, some the options in Accordance Analytics tab and zone on the other hand do. So, I this might be a great ’Instant details' feature request.

Thanks, Brian. I will put in a feature request.
(Note, however, that Ctrl-Mouse-Over does display the correct # of occurrences in Greek—as I presume it was designed to do—it is only in Hebrew that the numbers are often wrong.)
